Judges 14

June 9, 2007

1 Samson went down to Timnah and saw there a young Philistine woman. 2 When he returned, he said to his father and mother, “I have seen a Philistine woman in Timnah; now get her for me as my wife.” 3 His father and mother replied, “Isn’t there an acceptable woman among your relatives or among all our people? Must you go to the uncircumcised Philistines to get a wife?” But Samson said to his father, “Get her for me. She’s the right one for me.” 4 (His parents did not know that this was from the Lord, who was seeking an occasion to confront the Philistines; for at that time they were ruling over Israel.) 5 Samson went down to Timnah together with his father and mother. As they approached the vineyards of Timnah, suddenly a young lion came roaring toward him. 6 The Spirit of the Lord came upon him in power so that he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat. But he told neither his father nor his mother what he had done. 7 Then he went down and talked with the woman, and he liked her. 8 Some time later, when he went back to marry her, he turned aside to look at the lion’s carcass. In it was a swarm of bees and some honey, 9 which he scooped out with his hands and ate as he went along. When he rejoined his parents, he gave them some, and they too ate it. But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey from the lion’s carcass.

10 Now his father went down to see the woman. And Samson made a feast there, as was customary for bridegrooms. 11 When he appeared, he was given thirty companions. 12 ”Let me tell you a riddle,” Samson said to them. “If you can give me the answer within the seven days of the feast, I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes. 13 If you can’t tell me the answer, you must give me thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.” “Tell us your riddle,” they said. “Let’s hear it.” 14 He replied, “Out of the eater, something to eat; out of the strong, something sweet.” 14 For three days they could not give the answer. 15 On the fourth day, they said to Samson’s wife, “Coax your husband into explaining the riddle for us, or we will burn you and your father’s household to death. Did you invite us here to rob us?” 16 Then Samson’s wife threw herself on him, sobbing, “You hate me! You don’t really love me. You’ve given my people a riddle, but you haven’t told me the answer.” “I haven’t even explained it to my father or mother,” he replied, “so why should I explain it to you?” 17 She cried the whole seven days of the feast. So on the seventh day he finally told her, because she continued to press him. She in turn explained the riddle to her people. 18 Before sunset on the seventh day the men of the town said to him, “What is sweeter than honey? What is stronger than a lion?” Samson said to them, “If you had not plowed with my heifer, you would not have solved my riddle.” 19 Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon him in power. He went down to Ashkelon, struck down thirty of their men, stripped them of their belongings and gave their clothes to those who had explained the riddle. Burning with anger, he went up to his father’s house. 20 And Samson’s wife was given to the friend who had attended him at his wedding.

Sampson was raised up by God to punish the Philistines for ruling over the Israelites. Samson didn’t always carry this out in righteous ways and he obviously had a temper. The point of this chapter and most of the stories of the various judges of Israel is to see God at work through the situation not necessarily how righteous the person was that He was using. Some of this chapter like the lion carcass was just to give an account of how strong Sampson was when God’s Spirit came on him. It took me many years to realize that this first wife wasn’t Delilah. Sampson apparently had a weakness for Philistine women (which cost him dearly) and he had two wives at two different times.

im kind of confused because yesterday i read that to be a nazirite you couldnt be around dead things and then he went and ate out of a dead lion…now im not sure if it was just humans or what but if anyone has any insight on that i would like some help because i cant figure it out

and the whole riddle thing is basically what it had said about how God was setting up sampson to punishthe phillistines and this was just the beginning of said punishment

    kip hop(peace out)

  6. ok so Samson sees a girl and tells his parents that that is the girl for him and his parents question him asking why he couldnt find a girl from their town but he persists that this is the one he wants…so the go get the girl and her and samson come to find that they like eachother and they get married. when samson went to see the women he was given thirty companions and he said he would give them a riddle of if they solved it on the 7th day he would give them so clothes and vis versa. So the thirty man cant figure out the riddle so they tell Samson’s wife that is she doesnt tell them the riddle that they will burn down her families home so she asks samson and riddle and then she tells the thirty companions and samson goes and strikes down thirty to keep his end of the deal to give clothes to the companions

I heard a great analogy in church tonight. The speaker said that he went ice fishing with is brother in law up north. The lake was frozen over and the ice was 12 inches thick. They had to cut a whole through the ice and they cut it about 8 inches around. While they were fishing, the speaker asked his in-law how deep the lake was. The guy said it was 18-20 feet deep. But, he said, if you will lay on the ice, put your face in the whole, put your hands on the sides of your face to block out the sun, you can see the bottom of the lake and see the fish swimming down there. The speaker didn’t believe him, but he tried it. He lay on his belly on the ice, cupped his hands around his face to block every thing out, stared into the lake for 5-7 minutes to allow his eyes to adjust, and then amazingly, he could see the bottom 20 feet down and see the fish swimming down there.

Here is the spiritual point. When we come to blog. If we don’t block everything out, stare into Jesus until our spiritual eyes focus on Him and block out the world, we will never see the bottom, or the deep things of God. If you only stick your face in and stare for a minute, you will only see the surface and experience the truths that happen right on top of the Scripture.

PK’s message today was a great illustration. All of us have probably heard the story of Elijah and Jezebel several times. But to extract the deep truths about the spirits at work in that story took time of deep study and focusing in on the Scripture.

Sampson had a problem with spontaneity. He saw the woman and he wanted her. He became angry and upset, and he killed. In the chapters to come we will see this pattern repeated. He is a sad story of someone that was given great gifts, and accomplished things for God, but could have changed the world if he could have learned to deny his flesh. Imagine someone with the attitude of Paul and the gifts of Sampson. All through his story you will see someone that indulges his flesh and is consumed with his talents. He does not always follow God’s principles, but ultimately God’s will of punishing the enemy of Israel is accomplished through him.

Hey fellas—be aware of the persistence of a woman ;) Ladies recognize the power you can have over a guy—dont abuse that and use it for personal gain—be women of integrity that dont cause their men to compromise

Ryan—gotta tell ya…good job picking up on something you study yesterday and then seeing something that sounds like something else…gonna go study it out and see what I can figure that out for ya…

Ok Ryan…in my studying the commentaries commented that the uncleaniness of a dead animal is not close to the uncleaniness of a person—therefore there was no violation of the nazarite code

But I did find some really interesting stuff in reading this—Samson took hold of the honey without any fear of the bee stings—never thought about the bees attacking him—he just scooped up the honey and shared it—now do you think those along with him noticed this—what do you think that they thought when he didnt fear the bees, he didnt respond to the stings???

Also, the commentator also illustrated the comparison Our Lord Jesus having conquered Satan, that roaring lion, believers find honey in the carcase, abundant strength and satisfaction, enough for themselves and for all their friends, from that victory.

Pretty good stuff—Rick great analogy brother—what caught my eye was that man was willing to lay on FROZEN ICE FOR THAT LONG—and ummm who was the first person to figure that out—what a chance that guy took to see if he could see the bottom the first time he tried.
